A new graffiti by the anonymous artist Banksy was splashed with black paint 24 hours after it was discovered in Bristol.
Britain’s most famous street artist Banksy alerted his admirers of new work after posting photographs on his website. The graffiti is named ‘The Girl with the Pierced Eardrum’ and it is a parody of the Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer’s masterpiece ‘The Girl with the Pearl Earring’. Instead of an earring The Girl on the wall incorporates a yellow alarm box.
The image was discovered on Monday at the back of Hanover Street in Bristol, Banksy’s hometown. By Tuesday morning, the bottom of the mural was vandalised with black paint. For now, there are no rumours for restoration of the piece as it was done with Hanging Man in 2009. The last defaced mural was ‘Anti-immigration birds’ in Essex, England which was painted over after the council received a complaint.
“The Girl with the Pierced Eardrum” puts an end to the speculations of Banksy’s arrest in London and revealed identity. The American website the National Report had reported on the hoax story but his publicist Jo Brooks confirmed the anonymity of the artist.
